Lya is a London-based artist who evades first impressions. With a background in toy design, Lya studied at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, which led to her current practice mixing contemporary imagery and ancient processes.

Liminal Beings
Liminal Beings are archetypical creatures that combine more than one distinct state of simultaneous existence within a single physical body, symbolising both the wisdom and the danger of a multiple nature. As a development of this concept, the liminal personae in my work can represent somebody or something of a mixed, hybrid nature, falling into a bareness of predicates - the openness of Agamben’s in-fancy as the origins of the human condition. By using materials and techniques of the Late Gothic period, I am also suggesting an intimate connection between the ‘then’ and the ‘now’, in parallel to my formal questioning of contemporary iconography.
