Nancy Cogswell is a Canadian artist based in London. Originally trained as an architect at the Architectural Association she practiced in London in partnership before setting up her consultancy. In 2005 she began painting full-time.

The origins of my work lie in the potential for keeping something hidden or safe, whether it’s precious, calamitous, mournful or even uncanny. There are echos of my peripatetic early life with a father in the intelligence world. I explore concepts of containment and concealment in pseudo-abstract paintings that indicate furniture, specifically interiors and exteriors of tables and drawers. The work bears traces of my architectural background but the concerns have shifted from the 3-D certainty of buildings to exploring constructed illusion. I deal in territories that include formal abstraction and colour field painting. The work is essentially paradoxical, both thematic and without narrative, pictorial and intangible, domestic and heroic.
