Born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire in 1973. Mark Billingham undertook his Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Harrogate College of Art in 1995. In 1998 Mark gained a BA honors Degree in Interior Design at Chelsea College of Art & Design. Mark lives and works in London.

My practice is about translating experience into paintings. I begin with the ‘things’ that I can quantify within the environment I live. Like drinking coffee, reading the newspaper. Contained in these experiences may be details that catch my eye and build a deeper interest. The details that hold my attention suggest both personal narratives and wider issues within a more global context. The source for a painting is always an idea that is grounded in a human experience. Colour, form and mark-making are essential to describing the experience. I remove the ephemeral and only include the essential. A sense of visual rightness is necessary for the composition to describe the experience.
