The MA Show 2011

There’s something special about this art school, I recognise the reaction in others as they enter the building for the first time, it reminds me of the first day I arrived in the foyer as a newly graduated student to do my first days teaching. It’s the smell of oil paint that reminds us of tradition, the drawing studio and plaster room evidencing learning, but most importantly it’s the community of students and staff who are actively discussing and exploring how to make painting and sculpture perform as a dynamic force within the wider cultural context of fine art, that makes it a great place to teach and learn. With a broad range of students who come to us from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, the teaching year for the tutors is always a rich and fulfilling experience. This year as much as any, it has been a privilege to be in contact with students who have fulfilled their creative journeys with excellent bodies of work making the end of year show an exciting prospect.

On behalf of the Art School I wish the graduating students all the very best for the future as they begin their journey beyond the red doors. These old buildings, which trigger reverie, somehow have the ability to inspire beyond individual expectations. There is something special about this art school and this year ’s graduates, who are now part of its wider family, are testament to that.
